A Typical Meeting

Typical meetings at New Horizons Toastmasters consist of three parts:

  • Table Topics
  • Prepared Speeches
  • Evaluations
Table Topics give each member the opportunity to participate in impromptu speech situations. The Tabletopics Master is in charge of this portion of the meeting. He or she will encourage all of those present at the meeting to speak, usually by asking questions related to the theme of the evening. Sometimes the questions are presented verbally. Other times, they are printed out and passed around in an envelope.

Members (and guests) are encouraged to present their table topic response in as an organized fashion as possible (i.e., think of your response as a mini speech, with an opening, body and close). The best table topic speaker is chosen by popular acclaim and an award is handed out at the end of the meeting.

Prepared speeches are presented during the formal speaking session. Members give speeches based on projects from the Communication and Leadership manuals. Speeches are also given for fun and practice.

After giving a speech, the speaker is evaluated during the evaluations portion of the meeting. Each speaker is provided with valuable feedback regarding the strengths of the speech and with information that will assist the speaker in problem areas.

Please see the roles you as a member will be called upon to fulfill.
