Mentor Program
Mentors are available at New Horizons Toastmasters. All of the club mentors listed below have achieved their Competent Toastmaster (CTM) or higher. The mentor serves as a role model, coach and confidante offering knowledge, insight, perspective or wisdom. This assistance enables members to learn and advance more quickly in their Toastmaster experience.
Mentors are not just for new members. Some of the more experienced members in our club can benefit from having a mentor too. When another club member excels in your area of interest this person could be your mentor and help you to further develop that special skill.
Trying to explain everything at once to a new member will only confuse and discourage. When information is provided over several meetings or several months it is less overwhelming and more likely to be understood and remembered.
Some areas in which mentors can assist are:
- Explain the various parts of the meeting such as Table Topics, Prepared Speeches and Evaluations and answer any questions.
- Explain the various roles such as Greeter, Timer, Ah Counter, Word of the Day, Chairperson, Table Topics Master, Toastmaster, General Evaluator, Evaluator, etc.
- Explain how to sign up for speeches and assist with, give advice and answer any questions about speeches.
- Provide feedback on meeting roles members have taken and speeches given.
- Explain and discuss "A Toastmaster’s Promise", its importance and benefits.
Obtaining a Mentor
There are two ways to obtain a mentor at New Horizons. They are:
- Find a mentor with whom you may want to work with for the role or speech(es) that you desire assistance. Approach that member either by phone or email and ask if they are available to assist you with the desired task.
- Contact the VP Education by phone or email. Outline which areas you desire assistance and determine who should be approached to assist you with that task.
A Finite Relationship
While a mentor relationship does require some time and commitment, the relationship does not last forever -- nor should it. The purpose of a mentor is to teach the member to think and act independently and successfully. Once the member has developed to the point where they are functioning effectively on their own, mentor’s services are no longer needed.
Note regarding mentoring for first three CTM speeches: Mentors who have coached a new member with their first three CTM speeches can obtain a credit towards their ATM application. In such cases, the mentor and member should inform the VP Education that this has been done so that the mentor’s record can be endorsed.
